These are artisanal chocolate-covered figs crafted by Slitti in Tuscany. They start with Calabacita figs (a small, thin-skinned fig variety from southwestern Spain) filled with a crema alla sambuca (a creamy sambuca liqueur filling), then coated in high-quality chocolate. Slitti calls them “Fichi Calabacita, farciti di crema alla sambuca e ricoperti di cioccolato.”

On the first bite, you experience the soft, fruity sweetness of the fig. Then the creamy sambuca filling adds aromatic sophistication (anise, vanilla, spirit warmth). Finally, the chocolate coating provides depth and keeps the flavors in balance. The interplay between the fig’s fruitiness, the liqueur’s brightness, and the cocoa’s richness makes for a multi-layered taste journey.

Take a fig and allow a corner to melt first in your mouth, noticing the soft fig flesh. Then let the creamy sambuca center unfold, offering scents of anise and soft spirit warmth, before the chocolate shell rounds out the experience. Pair these with aged amaretto or a gentle Anisette to echo the sambuca tones, or serve alongside a dessert wine like Vin Santo to match the fig’s sweetness. For a non-alcoholic pairing, try jasmine tea or a delicate herbal infusion. These also go beautifully with fresh soft cheeses like goat cheese or mascarpone, and dry fruit compotes for contrast.

The story of Slitti begins in 1969, when Luciano Slitti opened a coffee roasting business in Monsummano Terme, in the province of Pistoia, Tuscany. His vision was simple: to roast and offer exceptional coffee that stood out from the standard fare.In 1988, Luciano passed control of the company to his son Andrea Slitti, along with support from his brother Daniele. A couple of years later, in 1990, Andrea, driven by a burgeoning passion for chocolate, expanded the business to include artisanal chocolate production.
